Depression

Depression can occur at any point in a person’s life. Many people will experience some type of depression at some point in their life, it may not be what is classified as clinical depression or chronic depression. For these people, it may be outside factors causing the depression, and depression treatment will typically consist of more natural remedies instead of depression medication.

What is depression? Depression is usually caused by a change within the body that creates a chemical imbalance in the brain. Depression is often associated with other medical conditions as well as with times during a person’s life that involve severe hormonal changes. Examples of depression that is caused by hormonal changes can include teen depression, postpartum depression and menopausal depression. The drastic hormone changes during any of these times in a person’s life can cause depression, and this is why teenage depression and post partum depression are often treated in the same way. Temporary drugs may be given, or all-natural treatments will be used. In other situations, ones in which chemical imbalances are to blame, it may be strictly depression, or depression may occur in conjunction with another illness. Bipolar depression is common, as well as anxiety and depression coexisting.

More Information

Whatever the cause, a doctor will do a depression test to determine whether you have manic depression and to decide what treatment options would work best. There are many symptoms of depression, including changes in sleep patterns. This may mean you will suddenly want to sleep all the time, or you could suddenly have difficulty sleeping. Other signs of depression can include weight changes as well as appetite changes. You may suddenly eat all the time and gain a lot of weight, or you could suddenly have no desire to eat and begin losing weight. Depression symptoms can also include a loss of interest in things that were once important to you. You may suddenly not care about hobbies you have previously loved, or have dissatisfaction in areas of your life that you are otherwise content. It is also common that normal occurrences, such as an argument with a friend or a bad grade at school, that would only affect you slightly under normal medical condition, will suddenly be overwhelming and seem bigger than it is. A feeling of helplessness often occurs with severe depression, and in the worst cases, suicidal thoughts can occur. If any of these symptoms occur, it is important to seek medical attention for treatment of depression.
