Constipation

Constipation occurs when the bowel movements suddenly occur less frequently than normal. This can vary by individual, depending on what is normally considered regular for them. When a bowel movement does happen, the stool is difficult to pass. The symptoms of constipation can include a lack of bowel movements, pain in the stomach, bloating, and the feeling of needing to make a bowel movement but not being able to.

Constipation is a natural occurrence, and happens commonly in many people. There are many causes of constipation, and it can be as simple as a certain type of food that causes constipation. This also means, however, that constipation relief can often be obtained by simply making dietary changes. If, however, the person experiences chronic constipation, or severe constipation, remedies other than minor dietary changes may be necessary. Constipation in children often occurs, as well, and medications may be necessary to help relieve the pain associated with constipation when this happens.

More Information

Foods that cause constipation often include any type of food that is high in fats and sugars, and low in fiber. For some people, constipation can easily occur if they ingest a lot of dairy foods, or foods high in protein. This can often include cheeses and some soy products. Highly processed foods are often associated with causing constipation as well, and a diet low in fiber is a surefire way to end up constipated. Since constipation is typically caused by the diet, constipation treatment will often involve simply making changes to the diet. The typical constipation remedy is to lessen the intake of constipation causing foods and beverages, and increase the amount of fiber and natural diuretics. One well-known home remedy for constipation is to drink coffee. Increasing intake of other natural constipation cures, such as prunes, can often help in relieving constipation as well.

Other home remedies for constipation can include mineral oil for constipation treatment, as well as milk and apple juice. By increasing the intake of certain foods, home remedies can lessen constipation and offer relief. In the meantime, however, if the constipation is causing pain or discomfort, there are many medications that can help. Over the counter laxatives will induce the bowels to move through the body more quickly, and can also offer pain relief. This, combined with dietary changes, can easily have constipation relieved within a day or two. Regulating the diet to limit the amount of processed foods and increase daily fiber intake can help avoid constipation.
