Anxiety

There are many types of anxiety that one can experience, although the symptoms of anxiety are often similar no matter what the type or cause. Anxiety can be caused by a chemical imbalance within the brain, or there could be a traumatic experience in a person’s life that leads them to experience anxiety at a later time. Often, hormonal changes within the body will lead to certain anxiety disorders.

Some of the most well-known types of anxiety can include test anxiety, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety, as well as generalized anxiety disorder. Social anxiety is an anxiety disorder that prevents people from being in large crowds, and can often get so bad that the person refuses to go in public at all for fear of having anxiety attacks. No matter what type of anxiety a person has, the anxiety symptoms usually stay the same, it is simply the cause that changes.

More Information

Often, the first time a person experiences an anxiety attack, they will not know what is happening. Many of the anxiety attack symptoms will mirror a heart attack, and this can have sufferers fearing for their lives. This often leads to a larger fear of the anxiety attacks themselves than whatever the trigger of the anxiety is. Anxiety symptoms can include chest pain, shortness of breath, numbness in the hands and feet, blurred vision, and a variety of other symptoms. This loss of control often leads to more anxiety, which typically worsens the symptoms.

When anxiety treatment is sought, the methods will often depend on the person treating the illness. If a general doctor is used, anxiety medications will often be prescribed. If a therapist or psychologist is used, the anxiety will often be treated with exposure. Since the anxiety attacks are often self-induced from within the brain, exposure to the trigger is often the cure. In some situations, however, anxiety is a part of a bigger illness, such as bipolar disorder, and in these cases, anxiety medication is often a must. It is still important, however, to achieve exposure and try to control the anxiety from within so that the medication can be stopped in due time. Since many anxiety medications will work to help relieve the anxiety, but in the process may have severe side effects, working with a therapist or psychologist during treatment is important. It can help lead to lowering dosages of anxiety medications, and it can help reach an eventual cure.
