Menopause And Pregnancy

While it may seem like menopause and pregnancy are two words that do not belong together, this isn’t necessarily true. For one thing, it is possible for each to mimic the other. For example, many women have thought they were pregnant only to find out that they were actually experiencing menopause. Similarly, a menopause pregnancy can occur when a woman thought she had her last period, signaling the beginning of menopause, but in all actuality, that period didn’t occur because she was pregnant.

The chance of pregnancy during menopause is slim, simply because the ovaries are producing less and less eggs over a period of years in order to prepare for the halt to come. However, pregnancy during menopause can occur, simply because all it takes is one egg to become pregnant. However, pregnancy after menopause is an unlikely occurrence, since menopause is actually only termed after a period has stopped for at least a year.

More Information

Am I pregnant or is it menopause? If this is a question that plaques you, the first step is to use protection to prevent a pregnancy in menopause (in case it is, in fact menopause). The next step to determining whether it is pregnancy or menopause is to visit your doctor. Depending on your age, your doctor may test for both menopause and pregnancy. This is true only if you haven’t been to the doctor to test for menopause already. Can the onset of menopause mimic pregnancy? Yes, since periods stop, acne occurs, mood swings are prevalent, etc., it is easy to mistake the onset of menopause for pregnancy.

Since menopause and pregnancy symptoms are often very similar, with the most noticeable of both being the loss of a period, many women can be left confused and not sure which one is occurring. This is especially true if the women is experiencing pregnancy and menopause symptoms at a younger age than normal. The thought of early onset menopause may not even cross the woman’s mind, but since menopause and pregnancy symptoms are the same, the two can be mixed up. Getting pregnant on menopause is not impossible, but it is unlikely. Is pregnancy possible after menopause? Not typically, although there are always medical situations that can rarely occur. Since menopause and pregnancy would both stop a period, it is not likely for a woman to end up pregnant more than a year after her last period.

If a woman does experience menopause and pregnancy at the same time, testing may be difficult, because menopause effects on a pregnancy test might interfere with results. Since menopause & pregnancy both change hormones drastically, the combination of the two might confuse results.
